The Seven Pillars of Ecommerce Exports

Product, platform, brand, marketing and ads, logistics, payments and operations: what to decide at each step.

How to use this playbook

Every ecommerce export business stands on seven pillars: Product, Platform, Brand, Marketing, Logistics, Payments and Operations. If one is weak, it pulls the others down. A good product on the wrong marketplace will not sell. A good listing with the wrong price will sell at a loss. Good sales with slow payouts can still run you out of cash.

When you are starting, you handle all seven yourself. This playbook takes each pillar in turn: what it covers, the decisions you need to make, a simple framework to make them, the mistake we see most often, and where ExportDuniya can help.

Read it once end to end, then come back to the pillar you are working on.

Pillar 1. Product: what to sell abroad

What it covers: choosing a product that buyers abroad already want, that you can supply reliably, and that leaves you a margin after every cost.

The five checks. Put every product idea through all five.

CheckWhat to look for
1. DemandBuyers in your target country already search for it and buy it online. Type the product into the marketplace's search bar and see what it suggests; look at bestseller lists and review counts.
2. CompetitionThere is room for a new seller. If the top listings each have thousands of reviews, it will be hard and expensive to get noticed.
3. Your advantageSomething that gives you an edge: a craft, a material, a cluster you know, a design, or a supplier others don't have. Indian heritage is a real advantage when it is genuine.
4. MarginAfter marketplace commission, shipping, duty, ads and returns, there is still money left per unit. Check it in the calculator before you buy stock.
5. Operational fitYou have at least two reliable suppliers, the product is not too heavy or fragile to ship, and its rules (testing, labels, certificates) are manageable.

How to decide (guideline): a product that passes all five is a main bet. One that passes three or four is worth a small test batch only. One that passes two or fewer is better kept aside for now.

Start simple: apparel, home textiles, home décor, jewellery and kitchenware usually need less testing and certification than food, cosmetics, supplements or toys.

Common mistake: selling what you already make because you make it, instead of what buyers abroad are searching for.
