Digital platforms let Indian MSMEs list products on foreign marketplaces, take orders online, and ship across borders without opening a retail store abroad. This overview focuses on what sellers in India actually use, with Amazon Global Selling covered in depth and Walmart as a short pointer to a dedicated guide. TikTok Shop is not treated as a primary path here.
Marketplace Seller Help and live fee schedules override any blog summary.
Your real cost stack is referral fees, fulfilment, ads, freight, returns, and FX. Model those from official fee pages and carrier quotes.
Official hub: Amazon Global Selling for India.
Amazon describes Global Selling as an ecommerce exports programme for Indian exporters to register and sell on multiple Amazon global marketplaces. Amazon's India pages cite 18 global marketplaces across North America, Europe, Middle East, and Asia-Pacific (Amazon also writes "18+" in places). Confirm the live page when you register.
Amazon's public India pages also state programme-scale figures (for example 200,000+ registered exporters since 2015, and cumulative ecommerce export metrics). Treat those as Amazon's own disclosed metrics; see the footnotes on their page for the dating of the data.
From Amazon's help content, typical registration inputs include:
You do not need an Amazon.in selling account first; you can register for Global Selling directly. If you already sell on Amazon.in, Amazon documents a path to enable global marketplaces from that relationship.
Amazon selling fees (professional plan, referral, FBA, and so on) vary by destination store and category. Do not copy a single percentage into your SOP. Use Amazon's official fee pages for the target marketplace and date-stamp your spreadsheet. For a structured India-exporter view of fee types, see our companion post on Amazon Global Selling fees, and model scenarios in the fee calculator.
Amazon's India Global Selling materials list example categories such as home textiles, apparel, health and personal care, Ayurveda-related goods, consumables (tea, spices, coffee), toys and sports, leather, beauty, office/furniture, books, and jewellery. Each category can need product- and destination-specific licences. Check compliance guidance before you load inventory.
| Platform type | Typical use | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| B2B portals (for example IndiaMART, TradeIndia, Alibaba-type directories) | Lead gen and bulk enquiries | Vet buyers; payment and quality disputes are on you |
| Niche marketplaces (Etsy, eBay, and similar) | Handmade, vintage, collectible, specialty | Category rules and destination tax differ |
| Your own D2C site + international payments | Brand control | You own traffic, FX, chargebacks, and logistics |
Only cite a platform's requirements from its official seller help centre.
Walmart runs a documented Sell from India programme for Walmart Marketplace (US). Start at the official page: marketplace.walmart.com/india-sell-on-walmart. Requirements, payouts, and fulfilment options are covered in our dedicated Walmart post. Do not invent fees here.
TikTok is restricted in India. Cross-border TikTok Shop routes, where they exist, typically need a foreign entity and are not a clean default for most Indian MSMEs. This site does not treat TikTok Shop as a primary export platform until stable, official guidance exists for Indian sellers.
